Celebrity Fans Wish Celtic Well

Some of the coolest people on the planet have contacted Walking on Snow to wish Celtic all the best tonight in their attempt to stage one of the truly great European comebacks of all time. Below is just a selection from the deluge of mail that arrived at WoS this morning:

Morrissey- 'Come on lads, you can do it. Get stuck into them.'

Kate Moss- 'Let's wipe the grin off Gordon Smith's face- come on the Hoops!'

David Brent- 'Professionalism is... and that's what I want to see tonight at Celtic Park. Bada bing.'

Al Pacino- 'If we get in amongst them and get an early goal they'll be rattled. Make yourselves legends, Bhoys.'

Conor Oberst from Bright Eyes- 'Wish I could be there tonight. I'm praying the new Bhoys live up to the club's heritage- as Big Jock said, 'The Celtic shirt does not shrink to fit inferior players'- come on the Hoops!'

Cat Deeley- 'Best of luck tonight. Do it for me, Bhoys- Hail Hail!'

Stevie Wonder- 'Come on the Hoops- let me see you do it'.

Federal Agent Jack Bauer of the FBI's Counter Terrorist Unit- 'Shoot on sight. Do anything you need to do to get the result- I'll be watching on Sky at CTU Los Angeles Frank McGarvey no.1 CSC. My daughter Kim will be wearing her new Nike top too. Don't let her down, dammit.'

The match is on live on Sky Channel 960 or something here. I wish the build up started now- pumped for it lads, pumped.

Boruc must start- everyone agrees on that. Camara? Can McManus play left back? Or is Varga fit? If he's not fit, then I think we'll only have 4 fit defenders anyway, unless Thommo played left back (which he's capable of doing), with Aliadiere on the left.

Is Zurawski injured? If so, who plays beside Hartson? I'd play Maloney- he caused them real problems in the first leg. So:

Boruc
Telfer- Balde-McManus-Thompson
Beattie-Lennon-Petrov-Aliadiere
Hartson-Maloney

That team looks a wee bit lightweight in fact- am I missing someone really obvious?

My nerves are jinglin' and a janglin'. Up for it though.
I was climbing at an indoor centre today in Glasgow and bumped into Brian Blessed. He reckoned that with the vocal support of the CP crowd, we could be in for "one hell of a match." He also reckoned we could win in extra time.

Good effort- crowd seemed really good- some excellent performances from individuals, and the team looked more like a team. A quick run through would go something like:
Boruc- 6- Nothing to do, but looked confident- automatic number 1 until he does something wrong.
Telfer- 6- Battles and uses the ball pretty well, but looks slow over any sort of distance- I'd worry about that against the likes of Hibs. Solid enough though.
Camara- 6- Much better- fair play to him for even showing his face. Still not sure about him defensively, but delivered a killer cross for Beattie's goal.
Balde- 7- Good- looked focused, played well, got booked needlessly.
McManus- 7- Played well, scored an important goal that will help his confidence. He's still got a way to go in terms of provig himself over a long period/in big games etc, but I thought he did well tonight.
Lennon- 7- Much better- helped the defence out a lot tonight which he hadn't been doing previously.
Petrov- 8- The class act looked more like himself- loads of energy, box to box etc- I'd like to see him make himself available for more shots from edge of the box- bad luck with an excellent overhead kick.
Thommo- 8- took on a lot of responsibility- scored an excellent penalty, almost scored from a free kick, made himself available all the time, misplaced some passes, but at least had the nerve to try to make them. Welcome back, Thommo.
Wallace- 5- Not his fault- Strachan's most baffling decision of the night- played Wallace on the right after Maloney had looked the part against the same team last week. Did his best in an impossible position.
Zurawski- 6- Looked good- did well for the penalty, which should have led to a sending off. Made himself available- still looks like he's not quite sure what position he's supposed to be playing in. Again, that's not his fault.
Hartson- 9- Fantastic. Ran his heart out, held the ball up, scored a good goal- made the whole game a nightmare for their central defenders.
Maloney- 6- Did quite well, made one but missed two great chances. Still- he looks like he has a future.
Beattie- 7- Aagin looked the part and kept his composure to score. He's not particularly exciting but he obviously scores goals. I like him.
Aliadiere- Excused- Didn't touch the ball.

Ok- that's far longer than I intended. As for Strachan, he looked more like a manager tonight. Weird decision to play Wallace on the right (surely Aliadiere would do that job more effectively if he wants a leftfooter on the right?). Redeemed himself to some extent tonight. Two victories in the league, then a victory at Ibrox, and his rehabilitation will be complete.

bjd;
agree with most of your points but feel you sell Boruc short; he integrated beautifully with the defence, rolling the ball out to the back four rather than engaging in the wasteful long ball to the front men/four opposing defenders method employed by Marshall/Douglas/Hedman/Gould ad infinitum. He also seemed to marshal them in a way lacking in recent keepers.

Camara was still a poor 4; jittery and had his blushes spared by Lennon's doubling up with him throughout. I also thought Maloney was far more influential than you gave him credit for; more or less everything good went through him when he was on.

The ref gets a one; howlers given against both sides and a bizarre amount of injury time (30s per sub = 2.5mins; what about the injuries both real and imagined?) and a lack of control over the (typical) continental diving histrionics.

Oh well...

p.s. a solid 8 for the MC; bringing on Ramon Vega at half time and making us wish for his return was an impressive feat. Similarly, leaving the Celtic team in the dressing room while the Bratislavatians stood in the middle of the pitch listening to "...Walk Alone" from 60000 fans was pretty good too...
I think tonight that the 12th man of the faithful played a pretty good game, especially after some of the crap we've seen recently...

Ok- the sruff you're saying there is obviously stuff you'd pick up from being at the game, especially re Boruc.

Maloney played well, and if he had a calm head when confronted with a chance he'd be a true star. As I said though, his preseason and early season performances lead me to think that he may turn out well after all.

We didn't even make the third qualifying round. A total disgrace. That's all tonight. Hopefully I'll feel more positive tomorrow. Gutted!

HR- I can only assume that those 15000 people weren't reading the same websites and talking amongst themselves as we obviously were. I'm definitely disappointed at anyone who just sat at home. Another possibility, though, is that Celtic have literally thousands of fans who travel to Glasgow from all over Ireland and England- I can see some supporters clubs having to cancel their bus due to lack of interest last week. I thought the fans who were there did a great job.

By the way, it's looking like Nakamura is available for Saturday. I think the team will look something like:

-----------Boruc------------
Telfer-Balde-McManus-Camara-
---Petrov-Lennon-Thompson---
---------Nakamura-----------
------Hartson-Zurawski------

Hang on- I do want to play Maloney though. Maybe start with Nakamura on the bench, Maloney playing on the right side of four in a 4-4-2?
